How beautiful is the arabesque. That moment of stillness as the arabesque is held in perfect balance. However, if there are problems with your arabesque or you are experiencing low back, hip or groin pain, you could have a sacroiliac joint injury.
Low back pain and hip pain are common occurrences in dancers. Injury to the sacroiliac joint is thought to be one of the most common causes of low back pain and hip pain. The sacroiliac joint can refer pain to the low back, lateral hip and groin when injured. These are common complaints in dancers and can cause limitations in specific dance movements such as extensions and developpes.
Injury to the SI joint can be due to a combination of a single trauma or from overuse factors involving repetitive micro-trauma. Any hip pain presentation in dancers (and non-dancers), always includes assessment of the sacroiliac joints and lumbar spine as well as the area of symptoms.
There is positive evidence of effectiveness for spinal manipulative therapy in the treatment of low back pain and sacroiliac joint injuries. Treatment to the lower limb at the knee, ankle and foot can also be useful to prevent return of problems in the pelvis, as well as rehabilitation of muscles around the pelvis and hips.
